The Basics of Ultrarunning

A general manager with Patagonia in the San Jose suburb of Palo Alto, California, Nathan Duncan has a history in both natural resource management and education. Outside of the professional arena, Nathan Duncan is a dedicated runner who engages in both trail running and ultrarunning.

Distance running has long been defined by the marathon, which covers 26.2 miles. Ultrarunning takes things to the next level, requiring runners to race at least 31.07 miles. Other standard ultrarunning distances include the 50-mile and the 100-mile.

People have been running extremely long distances since prehistoric times, but modern ultrarunning competitions have roots in the "ultra walking" wagering activities of the 1700s, in which men would walk as far as they could over a 24-hour period. Today, over 70,000 athletes compete in ultrarunning races on an annual basis.

Although he has now aged into retirement, Greek runner Yiannis Kouros remains world renowned as the best ultrarunner in the history of the sport. In fact, he has earned the nickname the "Running God."

About Nathaniel Duncan

Longtime learning and development professional Nathaniel Duncan draws upon more than 20 years of international education experience as a teacher, volunteer, and administrator. He holds degrees from Kutztown University, Boston University, and the Queens University of Charlotte, and maintains a license as a school administrator in North Carolina, where he previously lived with his wife, Ann. Nathaniel Duncan also completed certification as an outdoor educator through the National Outdoor Leadership School and gained environmental education experience as a volunteer with the Peace Corps in West Africa.

Nathaniel Duncan started his teaching and administration career in 2000 when he joined Hingham Middle School in Massachusetts as a history and geography teacher. Over the next two decades, he served as a high school teacher in Massachusetts and North Carolina as well as head of school for institutions such as Academy at Trails Carolina. While living in North Carolina, his wife, Ann, served as the pastor of the United Methodist Church in Maggie Valley.

In 2019, Nathaniel Duncan transitioned into the outdoors industry when he accepted a position as general manager of the Patagonia store in Palo Alto, California. There, he oversees a staff of 30 employees while managing operations for a business that generates $3.6 million per year.
